Role in the project "Learning Lives"
Co-director, with particular responsibility within the project for
overseeing the survey (BHPS) and statistical analysis of the data.
Background & Expertise
My research has encompassed the relationships between schools and
the wider community, especially parents, and how these were marked
by gender, ethnicity and race, including the effects of various
interventions involving families and communities on children's
attainment at school, particularly their reading and language
attainment. My work, looking at intergenerational effects on literacy,
language and learning, has not only given me valuable experience of
working with large longitudinal quantitative data sets but also
lessons on the importance of the connections between research, policy
and practice. Working as part of teams of researchers, policy makers,
practitioners, parents and other family and community members has
required me to give a high priority to communicating my research
findings to fellow researchers and also a wider audience of professional
and lay people.
